Embracing the Light
Photography wisdom often dictates that the golden hours—just after sunrise and just before sunset—offer the most breathtaking light. The low angle of the sun provides soft side lighting, revealing the beauty of each subject without harsh, crushed shadows or blown-out highlights. But to me, that left too many hours untouched, too many opportunities abandoned. Because of that, I often choose to ignore conventional photography wisdom and wander out to explore midday.
It is in these so-called "bad" lighting conditions that I have created some of my favorite images—proof that beauty exists beyond the rules. What follows is a small collection of these.
By exposing for the subject, the blown-out highlights provide a blank canvas that allows it to stand out. No distractions—just the raw intent of the photograph. As land, water, and sky melt away, the subject is left to occupy the space, free of any harsh geometric boundaries.
This page is an ode to presence—to seeing light not just for what it is, but for what it makes possible. It is an exploration of embracing beauty whenever, wherever, and however it finds us. It is a celebration of the rewards discovered when embracing the light.
